Pahokee although is associated with Florida Heartland it is officially a part of South Florida. Located on the shore of Lake Okeechobee in Palm Beach County and has a recorded population of 6,450 as of 2007 by Census Bureau. Pahokee means “grassy waters” in the Creek language and residents refer to it as “The Muck” which means mineral rich dark soil where sugar cane, citrus fruits and corn grow. It was also known as the “Winter Vegetable Capital of the World”. It has a 110-mile Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail that can be walked, biked, hiked, rollerbladed or traveled by horseback.The trail is on top of the 35-foot high Herbert Hoover Dike showing a spectacular view of the lakes below it. This also makes it ideal for bird watching, fishing and photography.
