These plans were costly and would need financing. Dr. Núñez found it through the father of her dear friend and former university classmate, Mr. Rafael Labarta, who also considered it an opportunity to include his daughter-in-law, Margarita Sanchez Mestre, a recent graduate of The Normal Kindergarten Teacher’s School. That was the beginning of a wonderful association and sisterhood, which lasted a full lifetime. The partnership was disrupted by the intervention (confiscation) of all private schools in 1961 by the communist government imposed in Cuba. The choice of “EXCELSIOR” for the school name which from Latin means: “Always Higher” actually represented the ideals of the founders. The Excelsior was created to fulfill the needs of a growing neighborhood and within walking distance for most students, instead of wasting time on the school bus. The school also provided transportation for those who needed it or live a little further away. The school provides lunch for boarding students and day students that chose to. The immediate response of the community was outstanding as was the number of new students. The sudden availability of the second building across the street was god sent!
