A Historical Park
Located on the south side of Lake Okeechobee, John Stretch Park is a fun, peaceful and exciting place to visit. You will find a strong sense of history upon each visit. This park was built in Honor of John H. Stretch and the people that have fallen in 1928. Stretch moved to South Florida in 1957 where he accepted the role of recreation director for the Central and South Florida Flood Control District. Stretch helped in the makeup and development of today's water management systems of Lake Harbor. The park was named in Honor of the victims of the 1928 great hurricane, which killed 1,800 to 3,000 people. In May 1970, a fire broke out in the cockpit of the plane that John Stretch was traveling in which caused it to crash in Fort Pierce. Stretch was 47 upon his death. John H. Stretch Memorial Park is operated by Palm Beach County and was dedicated in 1971 to all of those that have fallen and make up the history of South Florida.
