What Makes Attorney Tommy G. Smith Uniquely Qualified To Represent You? Tommy G. Smith is a Board Certified Elder Law Attorney. Certification is a voluntary program for lawyers, approved by The Florida Supreme Court and administered by The Florida Bar. The program began in 1982 to help the public choose lawyers. Certified attorneys are the only lawyers allowed to use the terms specialist, or B.C.S. for Board Certified Specialists when referring to their legal credentials. The Florida Bar evaluates all certified lawyers for experience and expertise in a particular area of law and for professionalism and ethics in the practice of law. Their slogan is, “Evaluated for Professionalism, Tested for Expertise.” Certification is the highest level of evaluation by The Florida Bar of the competency and experience of an attorney in a particular area of law. Board certified lawyers have a minimum of five years in law practice and must show substantial involvement in the field of law in which they are certified. They must receive a passing grade on an examination administered by the Florida Bar or meet strict criteria to exempt the exam. Certified lawyers must satisfy a peer review assessment of their competence in the specialty field plus character, ethics and professionalism in the practice of law. Certified lawyers must satisfy the certification area’s continuing legal education requirements. Board certified lawyers have met The Florida Bar’s highest standards for special knowledge, skills and proficiency in their area of law and professionalism and ethics in the practice of law. Tommy practiced law at a highly respected firm that was established in the 1950s for approximately nine years. He became a partner in 2015, and he established Smith Law, PLLC in 2019. He is a member of the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys, the Academy of Florida Elder Law Attorneys, Lawyers With Purpose, the National Care Planning Council and ElderCounsel. These are professional associations of attorneys who are dedicated to improving the quality of legal services for seniors and people with special needs. He assists clients with estate planning, wills, trusts, powers of attorney, probate, and qualification for VA and Medicaid benefits for long term care planning. Mr. Smith is licensed to practice before all Florida state courts, the U.S. District Court for Northern Florida, and the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims in Washington, DC. His undergraduate degree is from North Carolina State University. He has an MBA from the University of West Florida, and he graduated magna cum laude from Liberty University School of Law in Lynchburg, Virginia. Prior to attending law school, Mr. Smith was the business administrator for a local church after a long career in industry in various management and technical capacities. As a certified quality engineer, he received a corporate Circle of Excellence Award for leading ISO 9001 certification efforts. Mr. Smith and his wife, Debbie, have been active in church for many years. They are members of Hillcrest Baptist Church, and they have one son, Zack, who is also an attorney.
